CANAAN

PALESTINE

Canaan’s culture and values are built around a commitment to producing organic, healthy, fair trade food products, sourced from small-scale farming communities. To that end, and through our partnership with the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA), we are currently working with 2,000 farming families representing more than 15,000 individuals. Before Canaan, olive oil farmers were undercompensated for their oil, and many have left their olive groves unattended and in some cases abandoned. With the introduction of PFTA in 2004, olive oil prices quadrupled, and as the sector became viable again, many went back to become full-time farmers.

PFTA is now a network of 2,000 members, organized in 56 Fairtrade-certified farming communities, spread across Palestine, and is considered the largest Fairtrade olive oil producer in the world. To put things in perspective, PFTA farmers look after 60,000 dunums of olive groves (15,000 acres) and around 1.25 million olive trees.
